Engine (Lycoming IO-360) seems to run just fine; have not noted any change in operation and it seems to produce same amount of power.
The engine typically had been consuming about a quart of oil per 12 hours. The compression at the last annual (November 2021) on the number 1 cylinder was 72/80. I recently noticed a sharp increase in oil consumption to about 1 qt/5-6 hours. My mechanic performed a compression check last week and all cylinders were in the 70’s except #1, which was 50/80. Air could be heard escaping through the oil filler neck. The compression check had been done after the plane landed from a 15-20 minute flight, so the engine was hot.
Yesterday I changed the oil and cut open the filter; no metal found. Oil sample sent out (no results yet). I borescoped the cylinder and did not see anything remarkable. Did not see any scoring on the cylinder wall, both valves looked fine with no evidence of burning. There was only one dark spot on the edge of the piston top and corresponding dark spot on adjacent cylinder wall; that was the only notable observation.
Mechanic says the cylinder must be replaced and says it isn’t safe to fly the plane. Savvy recommends a cylinder flush. Are there any other things I should consider?
