In case you are in a relatively cooler location, like Phoenix, you may have missed the news that it's really, really hot here in the usually moderate Pacific Northwest. This afternoon in Seattle the temperature reached 107 F (41.7 C), which is the highest ever seen since records have been kept. That eclipsed the previous record of 104 set yesterday. And in Portland today's high was 115, also an all-time record. In Lytton, BC today's high was 46.6 C (116 F), the highest temperature ever recorded anywhere in Canada.

To make matters much worse, few homes in and around Seattle have central air conditioning, and the AC in most commercial buildings is intended to deal with maximum outside temps in the low 90s. I have spent the day pretty much holed up in my office, the only room in my house with adequate AC. I would fly out to the much cooler coast if my plane was not currently grounded awaiting the arrival of a Lycoming factory rebuilt engine. Fortunately the worst of the heat is supposed to be over, with temps around here "only" in the 90s tomorrow, and in the 80s the rest of the week.
