I recently ran across an anomaly regarding "Lord Corporation" Shimmy Damper's PMA applicability list. The newer Lord nose wheel shimmy damper is constructed differently with elastomeric rubber compounds eliminating the older hydraulic type damper.
The PA28-140, 150, 160, 180, & -181 are covered under Lord's PMA, PN: SE-1508-1. This PN shimmy damper is no longer available and has been replaced by PN: SE-1508-2. PN: SE-1508-2 is applicable only to the PA-28-151, PA-28-161, and PA-32-301. Both shimmy dampers are eligible to replace Piper PN: 456-015. In order to install the SE-1508-2 damper on the PA28-180 originally having a PN: 87358-004 damper, I had to show the progression from 87358-004 to 456-015 and on to the PMA'd SE-1508-2 on a field approval request Form 337. The shortcoming lies with the Lord Corporation for not updating their PMA. Even though the shimmy damper is PMA'd it is not eligible for installation without the FAA Form 337 approval.
The PMA listing is found in the new FAA "Dynamic Regulatory System" (drs.faa.gov) that just went live this past week. It used to be in the "Regulatory Guidance Library" (rgl.faa.gov) but no more.
