I was recently asked a question on LED position lights that may be answered better by Whelen Aviation Technologies (WAT) after this Labor Day Holiday.
The question is whether it is permissible to install clear lens covers over the wingtip position light LED bulbs for greater visibility. The traditional red or green position light (glass) covers do attenuate the light output somewhat. Now that the LEDs are made with a specific color (red/green), is the red/green glass covers necessary to remain legal with the FAA? I'm curious to find out if the requirement for the red/green covers to remain is as "demonstrated", thus required per FAA certification, or for some other requirement.
