LED panel lights solution

My instrument panel lights just went dead. We think it's the rheostat. Rather than replacing an old part I like to make upgrades if it has to be fixed. So I'm looking for an LED lighting solution. I intend to keep at least some of the analog instruments.

Has anyone done this? What parts did you use for the dimmer?
