Summary: Fuel selector would not pass fuel in left position due to shop rag/debris blockage. Pilot was using a homemade tool (pic) to assist in switching the tanks. Pilot was 81 years old with 31K hours and lost his medical 10 years before the accident. Maybe he was having difficulties reaching the selector to switch it back to the right tank.
