Last Friday a Mooney crashed while trying to land at my home airport, killing one and putting the other occupant in the hospital with very serious injuries. They had gone up for a local flight, from what I learned to familiarize the young woman who survived it with flying a Mooney so she could deliver the plane to the new owner. The weather was very low level freezing fog with ground level temp of about 1C. What could possibly go wrong? The crash was about 0.5 km from the threshold and first responders from the fire hall located less than 1 km away found the fellow already dead and the plane still covered in ice.

What the heck were they thinking? Neither one of the two pilots was a newbie.
