During a flight home yesterday from Oregon to Reno, NV we ran into very heavy smoke and had to pick up an IFR clearance to continue on. But, we did notice losing about an inch to two of manifold pressure shortly after being buried in the smoke. There was reported ash in the air as well. Luckily the plane is a turbo Lance and I was able to adjust to get the manifold pressure back and about an hour later when the heavy smoke cleared it seemed to run normal again, but we also were starting our descent.
Has anyone else ever experienced this? Was I picking up ash on the filter, or was it possibly just the fact that there is less oxygen in the smoke filled air?
True air speed was normal and primary factory gauges all read normally. Unfortunately my G2 insight engine monitor blanked out on startup (I need to get it run to a better ground location) so I wasn't able to monitor all the cylinders unfortunately, but it held good speed so I don't think there were any engine related issues. Plan to move the ground wire and ground run the engine tomorrow to ensure all is good.
