Last week my friend Gary put together a plan to fly over to 1M9 (Lake Barley State Park) in Kentucky for lunch. The plan was to leave our home airport at M54 (Lebanon, TN) with other flying friends, have lunch at the lodge and come home afterward.

After Gary checked in with a few of us, we ended up with three airplanes and seven people going. The aircraft included: One Piper Cherokee (mine); One Grumman Tiger; and One Piper Dakota.

So, on Sunday, Gary and I met with our passengers about 11:00 am at the airport. Our other friends would be meeting us en route as they were departing their private strip at home just as we left M54.

We got in our quick preflights and were ready to fly pretty quickly. Gary has it pretty good as his wife is a pilot and she did the preflight for this trip. On the down side for him, she also flew the airplane as well! I think he still had a good time as there was a lot of smiling all along the way.

The flight took me about 52 minutes and I think Gary’s Wife landed about 10 minutes before we arrived. Once on the ground, a quick call and a state park van was dispatched to pick us up for lunch. We took a few minutes on the ramp to admire some other beautiful airplanes that arrived ahead of us. It was good to appreciate the pride that had went into some we saw that day.

The ride over to the lodge took about 10 minutes. Once there we found a rustic building with a very large buffet for lunch. The lodge overlooks Lake Barkley and has some nice views from the restaurant. Once at our seats , we also found a menu available for the picky eaters, but I think our crew skipped that in favor of the buffet. We had a good time dining, talking airplanes and about plenty of other things in between.

After lunch, the young van driver was kind enough to take us by the marina for a quick stop and to obtain information on summer boat rentals. We are planning another flight over again in the summer to enjoy a pontoon boat. So, stay tuned for more...

We all took off headed home at about the same time and everyone arrived back safely at our home airports within an hour. I have to say, it was a nice little adventure, even if it was only a few hours on a Sunday afternoon.

Hope you enjoy some of our pics below.

Happy flying!

Harold
