Exhaust Slip Joints on Seneca

Any tips on getting exhaust slip joints on the Seneca to seal better or do these things just wear out over time and need to be replaced? Just replaced a portion of the exhaust, and it seems like where the new part meets the old that there is a bit of a gap (on the old piece) around the fitting.
