What is a normal engine oil temperature?
The Story: Went flying the other day in my Arrow II with a pilot and friend who until recently owned a turbo Arrow IV. He asked if my oil temp always ran high? I looked at the gauge, which indicated halfway between 180 and redline, and I did not have a good answer. The last time I thought about engine temp was last winter when I had difficulty keeping it at 180F even with the restrictor plate installed. The rest of the time, I just check that it is in the green, which it was. I do not have an engine analyzer installed but I have a JPI830 siting on the bench waiting for my mechanic to find a roundtoit. For those with an analyzer actually installed, what oil temp would you expect to see, flying on a hot summer day with ground temps in the low 90's and OAT temps at cruise altitude in the 70's? I am wondering if I need to send out the oil cooler for overhaul. I understand that the Vernatherm oil thermostat is supposed to keep the oil at around 180F.
