I've been struggling with a decision for a while to either pull out my EDM-700 and replace with something totally different or should I start cutting into the panel to make the awkward EDM-830 fit. The EDM-830 is mostly hot-swap and has upgrade pricing so it is very attractive as an economical upgrade.

NOTE: This is specific to a Lance / Six. The PA-28 has a different panel. The EDM-830 will not fit horizontally next to the radio rack unless the holes are elongated by about 1/2".

I found this pic on Trade-a-Plane for a 1980's Saratoga. The panel appears to be structurally the same as mine.

I like the general idea of how this is mounted but it would be nicer if it were inset. So the plastic would have to be cut. I'm wondering what is behind that black plastic around the gauge cluster. Is there metal behind there or is it just raised plastic? Does anyone know? Pics would be great if anyone has some.

I was thinking maybe this would work on the right side of my panel where the CDI #2 currently is.

Thanks.
