Class Delta radio issues

So I had an issue this past weekend coming in to a class Delta airport. I was 8 miles out and made several attempts to make contact, I verified my radio as I was talking to class C before being cut loose and over to VFR sq 1200. I Listened to awos and rolled over to tower. Several attempts no response, so I thought I needed to get ready for light signals, so An idea came to me to try the ground frequency and they answered, I let them know about issues on tower frequency and they Checked a few things and asked that I try again and we established communications.
