The Cherokee 140 is slow, and doesn't haul a lot of people. But it sure beats driving. And with ~49 gallons useable has pretty long legs. Case in point: Recent trip to TX. 850 miles straight line, or 1020 miles by car. Just under 8 hours flying with one fuel stop, so call it 9 hours to destination total time. VS 20 hours driving, with a fuel stop in just about every state gone through. (4 states) Times and distances given are one way. Double it to include the return trip.
Now driving is not affected by weather as much as flying VFR, but I've factored that in with this trip. The plan was to leave home on Sat, and return on Monday. But I didn't give much consideration to Ida. But I also didn't care too much because I don't really need to be home before the following Saturday. Just so happens my fuel stop is in the town where Th' Ol' Ladys sister lives. So, I drop her off in AR, and continue on to TX. Couldn't leave TX until today, planned to leave on Mon. Can't make it home today because Ida is still in the way, but I can make it back to AR, to stay the night with SIL. Ida will be out of my way tomorrow, and I should be home by noon Wed. Still beats driving.
