They aren't much for long cross country trips, but sure beats driving. We went this weekend to visit my SIL. She lives in AR, we live in GA. It's actually a pretty efficient mode of transport for two adults plus bags. 392nm one way. trip out had a headwind, took 4.8 hours, @7.7gph fuel burn. Average ground speed 81.6kt Trip back had a quartering tailwind, took 3.5 hours, average ground speed 112kt, 7.4gph fuel burn.
All in all, not a bad trip, just had to get up early yesterday to pre-heat before start (18 degrees). This morning in AR, it was a balmy jump in and fire it up temp, So I didn't have to get up as early. Was a good smooth flight, until the DG started precessing like crazy. It finally started spinning like a top. Time for an overhaul.

So don't discount the lowly 140 as a traveling machine. especially if you are on a budget that doesn't allow a six figure expenditure for something faster.
