My flying today consisted of a BFR and IPC involving a bunch (maybe 7 or 8) cycles of the landing gear. Until the end, the gear operation was completely normal. Coincidentally it was the plane's first flight after its annual inspection, during which no significant issues were found with the landing gear. The last time I tried to raise the gear today, after a missed approach at an airport near my home base, the GEAR UNSAFE light failed to extinguish and, based on the lack of a drop on the load meter reading, the gear pump motor did not turn off. I cycled the gear and it went down properly (resulting in three green) but when I then tried to raise it again the same thing happened. (Gear Down lights went out, GEAR UNSAFE light came on and stayed on, pump motor appeared to continue to run.) Not wanting to have the pump run continuously I put the gear down for the short flight to my home base.
As best I can determine, there are three likely culprits: a faulty pressure switch, a weak pump motor, and a significant leak somewhere in the hydraulic system. Other logical reasons that the gear would be prevented from fully retracting AND keep the GEAR UNSAFE light on, the auto gear extension system (which was bypassed anyway) and the squat switch, would also, per normal operation, also prevent the pump motor from running.
I will be calling our regular shop (which also did the annual) in the morning and get them to look into the problem, and I'll report on findings. In the meantime if anyone has any other ideas I would be happy to hear them.
