For information only; The following is unconfirmed and based upon reports of those who witnessed the accident.

Last Thursday at about 5 PM a Piper Light Sport aircraft crashed on the field at Santa Monica Airport killing both occupants.

Again, unconfirmed, ... the flight was an introductory flight with a 2000 hr instructor and a 15 year old male. At some point on a stable final approach to RWY 21 and at approximately 300 ft, the 15 year old reportedly pulled back hard on the flight control (stick) causing the aircraft to immediately pitch up to a fully vertical attitude, stalled, wing over and impacted the taxiway. Both occupants were killed on impact. A fire consumed the majority of the aircraft.

A flight operation on the field operates multiple light sport aircraft for primary instruction.

There is a report of a ATC recording in which the instructor can be herd saying, "Let go of the controls ... Let go!".
