I signed up to participate in the 2019 Holly Run to Tangier Island for December 7 with December 14th as a backup. Apparently this has been a tradition for 51 years where pilots in the DC area fly Santa down along with boughs of holly. This has been a big hit with the kids on the island.
Tangier island is a small island in the middle of the Chesapeake bay which is only accessible by air and ferry boats. The island has a lot of history starting in the 1600’s and has a population of about 700 people. The residents still have an Elizabethan accent and are hard to understand sometimes. When I was there last, there was only one car on the island and everyone else walked, used bicycles, or used golf carts to get around. The one police officer rode a Vespa.
The plans are for all the pilots to fly into Bay Bridge airport (W29) for breakfast, a safety briefing, and staging for the trip. Then all the pilots depart as a group and fly with Santa to Tangier Island (KTGI). The Tangier History Museum will be open and a presentation on the island’s history will be presented. Lunch is provided at one of the local restaurants. Sponsors cover the costs of the meals and a few reporters usually travel along. Below is a link on the event with some pictures from prior years. If you want to participate in this event, you need to preregister. There is a limit of 50 planes because the island's airport can't accommodate more than that.
