    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

If a runway has trees blocking the wind on a windy day I make sure that I climb at Vy+ because the wind will change as you climb near and above the tree tops. I have had the wind change significantly when climbing over the the trees causing the airplane to stop climbing requiring me to lower the...

    Archer fuel management w/solution

How much would it cost to fix your left fuel tank gauge? My stock Archer fuel guages are fairly accurate so I can just glance to see which one is fuller. I also have a fuel totalizer.

New to me 1977 Archer II, maiden flight, now so questions

You may have to relean mixture when changing altitude. I typically lean out in cruise at 7.5 GPH If you want to make your engine run consistently smooth you may want to consider some fine wire spark plugs. Unfortunately they are not cheap, but they are supposed to last a lot longer. I have put...

New to me 1977 Archer II, maiden flight, now so questions

Congrats on your Archer purchase! It is a terrific airplane, but I am biased with 85 Archer also. Are you using the POH that is kept in the airplane or a generic one to cover all Archer IIs when looking for those features? The early Archers had less features and more useful load. Later Archers...

    I was banned from POA!

LOL. It's like being married to a woman. Sometimes you upset them and you have no idea what you said. After 30+ years I'm getting better at avoiding trouble. :)

    Condensation in hangar

I park my airplane in a 40x50 Shelter logic hanger that has a concrete floor and I occasionally get a wet airplane when the weather is just right. Plenty of air leaks through so it drys up pretty quickly. It also happens in the metal T hangers and my friends say the dew problem is even worse.

Preheat then decide not to fly?

I was wondering the same thing in regards to corrosion, but I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes plans change. Nice to be able to turn it on/off with a click of a button. Bottom line for me is to have the airplane ready for service.

Private equity firm bought Hartzell and jacked prices a lot.

Kaman Aerospace was just bought out by Arcline which is a private equity company. It appears to me that companies are being bought out because they can jack up the prices on these low volume must have parts. It will be interesting to see what the impact to company will be long term. Probably not...

    Preheating cabin during cold weather

When its below freezing I preheat my cabin 15-20 minutes with an inexpensive 1500 watt heater that I place on the pilots floor pointed under the instrument panel. I place it there first thing in my preflight. I would not leave this type of heater unattended. The warm cabin helps keep the old...

Looking for some opinions on a cylinder/exhaust valve

Why is it bad to idle below 1200 RPM? If I do this while taxing I will be riding the brakes. Just trying to understand. That is a lot of additives. I do use Philips 20/50 and also use cam-guard in the oil, but not TCP and Marvel Mystery oil. I wonder how many owners use these additives routinely?

Engine Overhaul Test Unable to Perform

If you know that you will be fit to fly soon I would find a pilot who is building hours to go with you and complete the break in. There are usually plenty of young folks who want to log as much as possible. You can direct the break-in from the copilots seat.

    Safety wiring procedures

My safety wiring may take a few tries sometimes, but it is functional when done so things don't back out. My IA sets the standard with his fast snug safety wire applications. Thankfully the wire is cheap.

    Lube for starter flywheel

Can you please share the process/requirement? I have not done any starter maintenance, but maybe my IA has done some lubricating during annuals.

I would rather have your old cherokee landing gear than the RV-12 landing gear with a shopping cart wheel up front. :)

    Bertorelli says "Goodbye"...

I understand and should have worded it differently. I know most business owners work their butts off. My point was that if I was an expert in something that I was passionate about and I was in control, then I would have continued to work at a reduced pace in my sixties and possibly later.

    Bertorelli says "Goodbye"...

I recently retired at age 61 from a large corporation working as an IT Program manager. It was a demanding job with 4-10 meetings a day plus many weekend implementations. The weekend work was mostly at night and sometimes all weekend. When Monday came it was another busy week. The job paid...
