How difficult is it to replace the overhead duct with the knob for fresh air?

It can be a chore (the first time). Once you've done it, it's not so bad. I have a PA-28-180. If you have the same set up as me, do the following. 1) Remove hose clamp that secures air valve assy to blower. 2) Remove hose clamp that secures CAT tube to air valve assy. Take the...

    Garmin auto pilot

FWIW, the shop I used for my GFC500/Dual G5s installation guaranteed the labor cost upfront. No surprises at the end of the project. They felt they had enough experience with PA-28s to nail it down.

    I'd probably accept the deal.

    Garmin auto pilot

That's a better deal compared to what I paid for GFC500 and 2 G5s and installation labor. Does that include everything including sales tax, shop supplies, misc supplies like circuit breakers/trim switch/wiring, IFR cert, etc.?

Just pay up, you won't regret it. Trust me. 😄

    Buyer Beware

I had what is likely the same prop shop in Tucson overhaul mine for $2,100 last year which was about 20 years after the same shop overhauled it the first time. It took almost two two months though, first in, first out policy. This is also for a PA-28-180. Given all the coyotes, shysters, and...

    Vibration on downwind

You're correct, my poorly worded description. I did the work myself. Bushings in the nose wheel gear were replaced several years ago. I guess my use of "steering mechanism" is imprecise. I was attempting to refer to the tube that is welded to the engine mount that the steering gear rotates...

    Vibration on downwind

I am referring to inflight. I'm speculating that a certain engine rpm induced a vibration frequency that traveled through the engine mount to the nose wheel steering mechanism. One the shimmy dampener was repair, it may have dampened that vibration. I don't have a problem on the ground...

    Vibration on downwind

I had a vibration at reduced power of about 2250 rpm on a PA-28-180. Changed the 18 year old engine mounts; marginal improvement. Overhauled the prop; marginal improvement. I just rebuilt my shimmy dampener. BIG improvement.

    Trutrak/Aercruz 100 Quick Reference Guide

Example of checklist I use and have suggested to others. You can condense what you need to fit something like this. Keep it simple.

    Trutrak/Aercruz 100 Quick Reference Guide

Make your own, then you'll have exactly what you want in the format you want. It's a good exercise to do a deep dive in the manual condensing the information you want easy access to. If you don't have a laminator, take it to one of the office supply stores. I bet over time and with a bit of...

    Piper Shimmy Damper maintenance

Good point. In the pic there was no pressure squeezing the cylinder, it was merely resting on the vice in order to set the floating piston. I use the heavy duty plastic containers spark plugs are shipped in for protection when I do squeeze something in the vice.

    Piper Shimmy Damper maintenance

I already rebuilt it. Sort of the whole point to the thread.

    Piper Shimmy Damper maintenance

Here's the last pic I will show. I used a 3" 4-40 screw with a nut as a depth gauge to set the floating piston to the correct depth inside the rod. All the special tools in the instructions can be cobbled together with less than $10 in hardware. It is a bit of a challenge to reassemble but...

    KAPA RNAV 28 Approach Question

It's not so much a navigator question as it is knowing the operating parameters of the autopilot. If you were hand flying this procedure with the instructions given, knowing what to do wouldn't be in doubt. Like I said before in an earlier post, I learned this lesson just like you did.

    KAPA RNAV 28 Approach Question

For the GP to be captured, "the active waypoint is at or after the FAF" according to the manual. Since DOCKY is two fixes prior to FAF, that condition isn't satisfied. That's why I'm pretty certain you must do the step down after DOCKY before arming APR mode. I ran into the same problem...

    KAPA RNAV 28 Approach Question

I disagree with @Reece and you are right to say it isn't quite the same as a heading to DOCKY. Look in the Pilot/Controller glossary. A vector is a heading issued by ATC. That is not the instruction given. APR uses NAV for lateral guidance. Arming APR is telling the AP to capture the GP...

    KAPA RNAV 28 Approach Question

It's not really VTF because if you used VTF as the transition in the GTN, DOCKY could be omitted as a fix depending on which GTN software version you have. You're not being vectored to final unless you hear "vectors to final" from ATC. If you want to ensure DOCKY appears as a fix in the...

    KAPA RNAV 28 Approach Question

One way you can do this is: 1) Hit "direct to" DOCKY on GTN, assuming you're already in NAV, then select TRACK on AP, this gets you pointed to DOCKY 2) Load and activate the approach using EZBEL or DILVE transition. This ensures DOCKY will show up as a fix 3) Open flight plan page and hit...

    Archer fuel management w/solution

The GTN timer for scheduled messages resumes it's countdown when powered up again, so not an issue. That said, it's just a reminder more than anything. I try to never my tanks below 1/3 anyway. I once came dangerously close to running out of fuel and told myself "never again". My capacity...
