I stayed in touch with Bart for a number of years, but haven't been in contact recently.

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

"I remember seeing Art's planes for sale a few years ago". The original Juliet was destroyed in a crash in a corn field while Art was on the way to an airrace. He rebuilt her using a parts 140 that I gave him, but the rebuild was never as fast as the original (though still quite fast).

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

"Time goes by way too quickly". Don't it though :-)

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

"I had no idea that you are so obese". I'm fatter than a Thanksgiving turkey. On the plus side, I am losing weight. I doubt though that I will get down to the weight I was at when I had a tennis scholarship in College 60 years ago (115 pounds).

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

"For example when you are solo the loading is a lot less than for my 230 lb 6’4” frame". I missed the significance of that. What is the difference in loading between your 6'4" 230 pound frame and my 5'8" 230 pound frame? Please elaborate.

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

"I have flown from smaller runways than that one." I think that's true of all of us. In my 160hp PA28-150C when flying solo on grass, no wind, I am uncomfortable with any runway shorter than 800 feet.

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

Yes he was. He and I flew his 140 nonstop 952 miles in the Denver-Oshkosh airrace, landing with an hour of fuel remaining against an average 3kt headwind. The last hour we were seeing 180 mph airspeed.

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

Art was super nice and one of my closest friends. I miss him.

    Tennessee PA-32 Crash

What I find disturbing is that hevoverflew the runway while the engine was still running with plenty of height to glide in.

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

Well actually, they should have far better skills than me :-) "To each his own. Not all pilots have stick and rudder skill like you". I wouldn't claim to be a talented stick and rudder guy. Probably not even average - but I WILL land a J3 in far more severe crosswinds and turbulence than I...

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

"Exactly why tricycle gear is best. Except for the drag of the nose wheel." I disagree with that. In bad conditions, I much prefer being in a tailwheel because of the increased command authority. The reduced stability in yaw compared to trikes doesn't bother me.

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

"On final you can still see the touchdown zone and aim for it," Depends on what plane you are flying. It's one of the reasons for using a turning approach so you can see the touchdown zone for as long as possible - but you can't see it during short final. "In the later stages during flare I...

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

"Why would one look at the trees on the side of the runway?" Well, in my case it is because most of the planes I fly are old taildraggers that have no view out the front. You have to look out the side to tell where you are going.

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

It can be hard to stabilize once you get down to treetop height. "Do you guys do the same?" (Takeoff procedure) No, when between trees I prefer to increase speed to enhance control authority.

    Emergency off-field landing experience

"he only really safe way to fly that plane from the field would have been to drive a truck along a straight line to verify the surface and loadbearing ability of it". Why not just look at the landing trackway for that information?

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

"or because the tall trees were causing some extra convective action". Not convective. You were getting an erratic updraft on your downwind wing and an erratic burble on your upwind wing because of the trees serving as obstructions.

    Astrotech LC-2P At4210P0 won´t fit in Yoke PA28-151

I've had several Astrotechs. They invariably fail within a few hours. Throw it away and get something else.

    Tennessee PA-32 Crash

Thanks. Orest, do by any chance know Jim DeLaurier who designed and built the human carrying ornithopter that used to be stored at Toronto Downsview in the same hangar as the full scale replica of the Avro Arrow?
