    Emergency off-field landing experience

" MIF".. = "Maintenance Induced Failure" One nut loose? Maybe.. Two nuts loose?... Not maybe.. Were they disturbed lately? LOVE the butterfly cowl on the Warriors.. Preflight gets a look and tug on all kinds of stuff... :) Cap

Good call! If it doesn't smell, look, taste or sound right... it probably isn't.... :( MIF? Cap

    Aspen Customer Support

Same experience here... What I find interesting is that IT SEEMS that information like this is "downloaded" to their field people, unlike some others that seem to "reserve" this information to "senior" or "tier 3" support. Their front line people seen to be very resourceful. Many issues...

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

By the time you are on the centerline and apply full power, you are likely 30’ down the runway. This is the "fly" in the calculations.. Art's technique requires you to use the last portion of the turn to accelerate at FULL power. "Apply full power when at 45 Degrees from the runway heading...

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

If you think about it the reason is rather obvious. First, the faster you turn onto the runway the more runway you “waste” changing direction. Second, more runway is used before full power is achieved. Are you familiar with Art's takeoff technique? It addresses your thoughts. Done right, the...

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

I have as well... The shorter rnys here are usually on private property, often surrounded by "other" properties with trees. Toss in a 35C degree afternoon and an extra pax and life can get interesting. I have had to "run the numbers" more than once, thrown in a large fudge factor and waited...

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

Y You can see the effect of "popping" the flaps at 0:44 of the vid. The plane immediately pops up on the struts. Then, count "Thousand one, thousand two" and haul the yoke back to the stop. NOTE: This example has BOTH Art's VG and Gap seals. NOT RECOMMENDED this be attempted without the...

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

It's real.. If you can get 5 knots of "kinetic energy" before turning to the takeoff direction, that's almost 10% of your "lift off" speed... You will accelerate faster with the flaps up. Ever watch the flaps on a Cherokee while it is "holding the brakes" ? Lots of wasted energy blasting...

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

Art could make Cherokees go faster and takeoff quicker than anyone. He probably had forgotten more about Cherokees than others knew... Had several phone conversations with him about his performance mods. Their proof of performance was with his customers. Good thing, because he was NOT much of...

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

Not quite... but close! :) It starts with planning, decision on direction, correct selection of a fuel tank,, and a 180 degree turn, if the rny width allows. The "90 degree variation" is for narrower runways. Cap

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

Two notches... (25 Deg,) But Art's "Short Field Takeoff" is the result of a very disciplined approach to the procedure. It is very safe and repeatable, needs the mods, and if you get it right, the result is absolutely jaw dropping. "Popping " the flaps is only ONE component of the takeoff...

    Bose A20 Background Squeal Noise

Before 2005 all Duracells were made in USA and Europe. P&G apparently outsourced some, then more, of the production elsewhere after that. AAA and AA cells are very profitable items, all down the supply chain... Cap

    Land/takeoff on a narrow runway

My experience is that it is "convective" winds, just below the tree tops, then smoother as you "settle in". Landed on a narrow rny here when some one was burning some brush, and the smoke was drifting across the rny. The swirling air was very evident! Cao

    Bose A20 Background Squeal Noise

Hi Orest! Actually, yes.. I was a fan of the RadioShack/Source dry cells for a ling time, but started having failures about 5 years ago. A check with them found they had changed their suppliers, who I think were previously Energizers. (These were failures in twin or multiple cell applications...

    Piper Arrow 3 Turbo Compression

Opinions vary... >And after an hour of flying all of those compressions could indicate 20 to 30 pounds different! I will agree, "possible", but (opinion)....... unlikely. Agree... lot's of "bad data" out there.. My AME would not sign it off. This engine has a problem. How serious is to be...

    Piper Arrow 3 Turbo Compression

Jeff, as usual, (and always appreciated!) has offered his considerable wisdom here... and the best AMEs I know here would echo the same thoughts.. My AME would absolutely NOT sign off this engine in it's present state. Low 40 is a flag, something is wrong here and must be corrected before...

    Piper Arrow 3 Turbo Compression

Hmmmm... 6 hours in 8 months, was there a "gap" in the flying?..... Any oil tests available? I would seek more information. The engine may be saved.. still speculation at this time.. It needs help from a good AME for sure. The question is, do you wish to deal with it? It is not...
