What "low budget competitor" are you referring to?

Aspen had AHRS redundancy in 2007 for a lower price than the G500 by 10k.

Still waiting for the day when an OEM uses Aspen as primary...its not always about price.

Never price alone, the three keys are price, function and interoperability.

Even better would be the addition of a GFC 500 autopilot, which appears (based on the write-ups) to work hand-in-glove with the G5s. So for (I hope) around $15k you can buy and install dual G5s, with all the necessary accessories, and a GFC 500. That buys you redundant glass flight instrumentation and a modern, full-featured digital autopilot at about a third the cost of what's currently available. Pretty exciting!

If I didnít already have a solid performing Century 41 AP the GFC-500 would certainly be on my wish list, that is of course if it can be installed in a PA-32. My type may require the 600? Havenít even looked.

I already have one G5 in the plane and considering their relatively low cost it is pretty appealing to know that if the dang thing is out of warranty and goes poof in flight I know the cost to replace. I mean if the repair is greater than $1500 just replace it.

Garmin has announced that they will be going after STCs for the GFC 500 for PA28s, apparently some time next year. Haven't seen anything about PA32s.

Avidyne it targeting full IFD compatibility with the G5's, with firmware release 10.2.1, if at all possible.

Compatibility is good but STC and support is different thing. Garmin wouldnít include IFD in their STC or documents and Avidyne will not go through certifying IFD with those units.

G does like to be exclusive, but either involved producer can obtain the STC. Similar situation to the AXP340/322 as WAAS GPS source.

But, support is another thing.

IAC, I'm not in the market. Quite like my Sandia Quattro as ASPEN backup.

G5 works just fine with IFD. Initially I had some issues but it turned out to be connection issues. Avidyne couldnít support to troubleshoot and I had to call G telling them I have 530W in the panel. Support helped and It worked out eventually
