Default Lower Instrument Panel Overlays Removal Help

Does anyone have advice on removing the lower instrument panel overlays pictured?

I don't see any screws fot #1 and #4. Do the yokes need to be disconnected to remove them?

How about #2 and #3? Do the wall panels need to come off first?

Appreciate any help!

1970 PA28-140

Thanks,
Hish

I don't think you have to remove the wall panels for 2 and 3, they should slide out enough once you remove the screws on the bottom. For 2 and 3, yes you would need to remove the yokes to get them off completely, but if you just need to get to the gauges behind, just compress them (top to bottom) and pull them out, swing them out of the way using the control shaft as the pivot.

The false panels 1 and 4 are held in the silver track above and below. To remove take a flat screwdriver and press down on the top of the plastic starting at one end. You will bow the plastic out and you can pull it out of the track. Careful, the plastic is old and a little brittle. If you need to remove completely the yokes will have to be separated at the U-joint.

The lower panels are screwed into the bottom of the panel board. You have to remove the knob for the carb heat (allen). Sidewalls do not have to come off.

Default Lower Instrument Panel Overlays Removal Help

1 and 4 can be removed without removing the yokes if you carefully slice through them below the control shaft bushing. When they go back on the cut is hidden below the yoke. It does take some very careful twisting to get them around the control shaft without cracking them, but it can be done. I removed mine to paint them two years ago.

For 2 and 3, there are buttons along the bottom of the bolster. Pull the buttons and now you have a straight shot at the screw that hold the panel to the bottom the instrument panel. There's also a couple of screws below the tach and throttle that need to be removed.
