That makes perfect sense, yes.

I'm headed to the airport this afternoon to assess the next steps. I tentatively plan to have a new field wire pulled all the way from the regulator.

The mystery is whether I can have the repair done without having to pull the prop/nose cowl.

And the answer is yes, it can be done from below without having to remove the nose bowl and prop. Bottom cowling does have to come off.

Took a decent bit of time to extract the old wire, pull a new one, support it properly, and tie it into the regulator and alternator. The old one was really beat up. Also extremely thin, maybe 20 AWG. The new is tinned stranded 16 with good crimped (and heat-shrink covered) connections.

Test flight check and check, also replicated the symptom of the alternator coming back online as SK noted by pulling the breakers for a moment, though with avionics off as to not fry anything.
