How did it come to this? Some years ago while flying on US Air from San Diego to Calgary via Phoenix, during the stop over I was grabbing a burger and Coke for supper. The young fellow in front of me in the line had a nice shiny Delta uniform. When he ordered exactly what I wanted I leaned forward and told the guy at the counter to make that two of each and I'd get it. The young guy objected but I said it was my treat today. We shared a table and chatted. He was right seat in a CRJ, about 22 years old and naturally living with his mom since he sure couldn't afford much on an income of about $20,000 a year. I hoped he wouldn't regret his choice of career and wished him well.

Today the majors are paying excellent salaries. Half of some pilot retirement lists will leave in ten years. Captain upgrades are now three years at one of the big three.

It took a couple of decades but times are good for these guys, for many years to come.
